Some terms that may be useful...

Adobe Audition CS3 – This is used for advanced audio recording, editing and design.

Adobe CS3 Production Suite – This is the software bundle from Adobe, it is a full production package including programs such as:

Premier Pro CS3 (Video editing)
After Effects CS3 (Special effects)
Photoshop CS3 Extended (Image and video manipulation)
Illustrator CS3 (Image creation)
Flash CS3 (Web animation and applications)
Encore CS3 (DVD Authoring)

Blu-ray Disc (BRD) – This is the next step from DVD, they can hold over 5 times more data than DVDs (a dual layer can handle 50gb of uncompressed video and audio) and are used for the distribution of 720p and 1080p HD video and games. Blu-ray is split into 3 regions, A, B and C. Region B is Europe and Africa. It was developed by Sony and has recently won the format war with Toshiba halting production of it's HD-DVD format.

Colour Grading - A process that will give any video a distinctive look by altering elements of the image such as the hue, saturation, colour, brightness and contrast.

DSLR – The latest rage is to shoot films on Digital SLR cameras because they are comparatively cheap for the quality of footage they capture. As they use SLR lenses it gives them a very shallow depth of field similar to that of film.

DVD – Digital Versatile Disc, they are the standard media for the distribution of video and are either sIngle layer which can hold 4.7gb (approx.1.5hrs uncompressed video) or dual layer which has a capacity of 8.4gb (approx. 3hrs uncompressed video).In an attempt to crack down on piracy they are divided into 8 regions, Europe being region 2. 

DVD Authoring – Is the process by which material such as video and the construction of menus are burnt on to a Digital Versatile Disc so it can be played in DVD players.

DVD-ROM - This is a section on a DVD that contains files which can only be viewed on a computer. The user can open them directly from the DVD or copy them onto their own machine. The type of files are limitless and can include videos, images and documents.

Exporting - The final stage of a project when the edited video is turned into a file ready for use on DVD, TV or the internet.

FLV - A video format which runs off the flash engine. These are very effective on websites as they download the information as you watch it, otherwise known as progressive download. The are very small files which give a reasonable image quality.

HDV1 (Progressive) - HDV stands for High Definition Video and there are 2 different forms of it. HDV1 is the 720p format, it is made up of 720 horizontal lines of information and the P stands for progressive which means the entire image is displayed at the same time on the screen. It has a resolution of 1280x720 and is made up of square pixels.

HDV2 (Interlaced) - HDV2 is the 1080i format, this is an interlaced format so it is made up of 2 fields each containing the odd scan lines and the other conrtains the even scan lines. Each field it is made up 540 horizontal lines of information and the image flickers between the two fileds faster than the human eye can notice which gives you 1080 lines of information. The resolution is 1440x1080 so when the video is displayed on a monitor it has to stretch the pixels in order to get the right aspect ration of 16:9.

High Definition (HD) - High definition is the a step up from standard definiton, it offers much sharper, brighter images and it has a much higher resolution. There are a few different types of high definiton and each have different resolutions such as; 720p = 1280x720, 1080i = 1440x1080 or 1920x1080 and finally 1080p = 1920x1080.

Internet Video Compression – There are many different types of video compression, two of the most popular being wmv and Flash (flv). When using a video on the internet you need to lower the size of the file as much as possible whilst retaining as high quality as possible. This is best achieved by reducing the image size before compressing the video a process by which the encoder examines the video and disposes of any redundant data.

Matrox Capture Card – Capture card enabling us to capture and edit footage in Hi -Def. Well supported by Adobe and enhances the performance.

Mercury Playback Engine – This works with premiere Pro CS5 and CUDA graphics cards. It splits the workload between the CPU and GPU so that more formats and effects can be handled in realtime.

MP4 (Quicktime) - This is a video compression that was developed by Apple and it's particularly good for standard definition videos for YouTube.

PAL/NTSC – PAL is a colour encoding system that is used for British broadcasting, it contains 25 frames per second and runs on a 625 line/50hz system. NTSC is used in the USA and contains 29.9 frames a second and runs on a 525 lines/60hz system.

Post-production - This is everything that happens after filming, e.g. capturing, editing, effects, music, voiceover, animation, colour grading etc.

Premiere Pro CS5 – The latest version of Adobe’s video editing software. This professional broadcast quality editing program has been completely overhauled to work only on the latest 64-bit operating systems, this means that it can handle the latest formats such as DSLR and Red footage.

Pre-production - This is everything that happens before filming, e.g. idea development, script writing, storyboarding, location scouting, casting, test shoots etc.

RED – One of the biggest leaps forward in modern day film making is the Red camera. They are digital video cameras that can shoot up to 4K with a quality otherwise only found in film cameras.

Social Media - This is the term given to networking through the internet using websites such as; YouTube, Myspace, Facebook and Twitter. They are very effective for video because they all have a very large subscription base which can act as your audience.

Standard Definition (SD) – This offers a smaller resolution (720x576) than HD, and is what terrestrial TV is broadcast in.

WMV - A video format which play in Window Media Player, they produce a very good picture in standard definition or high definition and are also very effective on YouTube.
